Exclusive interview with Lzzy Hale presented by Carnival of Madness
We sat down with Lzzy just a day after her explosive performance with Eric Church on the CMT’s. She talks about a new album, what artists she would like to work with, and being “scissor happy”!
COM: Such an amazing performance last night with Eric Church! How did you get involved with working with him?
LZZY: Thank you! I’m still flying high from the CMTs! Eric Church has always been a fan of rock n roll. So he and his bandmates are actually fans of ours. It is quite the honor to be accepted into his world, and it’s so refreshing to work with someone who has the mindset of ” if it’s good music, then it’s good music” you can be a fan of Johnny Cash And Metallica!
COM: The CMT awards are in Nashville, what are some of your favorite things about Nashville?
LZZY: I love the people here! There’s such a sense of community and a huge support system for musicians. I’ve been invited into complete strangers houses to write or jam! It’s amazing!
COM: Would you ever go country?
LZZY: I don’t think I’ll ever be anything But Me. So, by me continuing to be an honest musician and just be myself… if that means a rock station, a pop station, a metal station or a country station wants to play My song. I’m totally down!
COM: You have been collaborating with some other artists outside the rock genre like Lindsey Stirling as well. Who would you like to work with that you haven¹t worked with yet?
LZZY: I’m a very, ” do what I want, when I want, with whoever I want” type of gal. If I believe or admire someone, regardless of the genre, I will be very happy to work with them. Lindsey is a shredder! She’s the real deal, and even when everyone said she’d never make it… She moved forward and did it anyway! I have a responsibility as a musician and a girl… To support that!
Next, I’d love to work with Eminem and I’d Love to bring P!NK to the dark side!
COM: You have your own band Halestorm, when will there be a new Halestorm album?
LZZY: We are currently in the middle of working on our 3rd record. We are planning on releasing it by the end of the year!
COM: How is the writing process for you? Do you write the lyrics and music, or is it collaborative?
LZZY: There are many ways to skin that cat! Sometimes lyrics come first without music or melody, other times it’s a riff or just a melody, or just simply a musical structure of a song first! That’s the beauty of songwriting, you just have to chase whatever excites you.
COM: What is this album about? Is there a theme?
LZZY: I can’t reveal all my secrets just yet. But let me say that our fan base has made me feel so comfy in my own skin, that I’ve been writing about subjects I’ve never had the guts to take on before. You’ll be stepping into the dusty, cobwebbed closet of my mind for this next record.
COM: I see you have your own jewelry/clothing line called "Scissor Happy by Lzzy Hale"…where did that name come from?
LZZY: It is based off of the guys always teasing me for getting a little “scissor happy” , and maniacally cutting up clothing to make stage outfits in the back of our vans/rvs/busses back in the day. We’ve been a foursome for 11 years, and for many of those years we were living off of peanut butter and jelly. So instead of blowing money on a pair of expensive pants, jewelry or a jacket I’d make the guys and I our own duds!
COM: Will you have time to design when you are out on tour?
LZZY: yes, I have a small toolkit I travel with. It’s therapeutic to be bending and snipping and breaking things in the back of our bus. Especially on the long rides!
COM:Who are your favorite designers that you like to wear?
LZZY: I really love the people at Affliction and All Saints. Depending on whether I wanna go for a casual rocker look or all out craziness… I usually find everything I need from them.
LZZY: I would like to take the time to thank all of the country music fans for letting me crash the party! And to all of my rock fans for letting me be your ambassador of Rock n Roll.
See you all on the road
